One aspect of yoga/life I find delicious to contemplate is this… I see students (and perhaps myself at some point in my practice) wanting to master a pose.
What happens if you do master the pose? there’s another, and another and another etc. when are you satisfied? when are you content? What if the practice is not to master the postures…, but the mind.
This is a 2 mm shift, so watch… you are in a pose and its one you struggle with, now shift your awareness from the pose to what is going on in your mind. What is your mind telling you? What is the narrative? THIS is the point. Address the narrative.
How about being completely content and happy in an uncomfortable place, instead of wanting to be somewhere else, maybe thinking that you are not enough? Now look at how that can translate off the mat to empower every moment of your life. I LOVE YOGA!
Do you think it is interesting that some people take their spirituality so seriously? Let me explain. I don’t mean to belittle the rituals and practices or the sacredness of those things. Those are precious to me too.
What I mean is why can’t we laugh more in a yoga class? put a little shimmy in a warrior 2 or wiggle in utkatansa?
Learn to fall out of a tree pose because the most important part of it is not how long you can hold but how many times you are willing and able to get up and do it again. So when you are deep in your practice rhythmically hypnotized by your ujyii breath, smile for crying out loud, the point is to enjoy yourself.
I have been practicing yoga since 2001 and studied under Robert Boustany since 2004, other teacher influences include Rodney Yee, Annie Carpenter, Johnny Kest, Saul David Raye, Shiva Rae, Rusty Wells just to name a few. I completed my 200 hour RYT certification in 2007 and 500 RYT in 2011.
Currently, my certification is a 500 hour E-RYT level with an emphasis in yoga therapeutics, bodywork and special classes for women. My passion for educating teachers to engage students safely inspired me to develop a teacher training program which includes asana, pranayama, anatomy, physiology, basic understanding of mantras, mudras, meditation, teaching methodology and other topics in compliance with Yoga Alliance.
I'm a Daoist Priest under the tutelage of Master Lao Shi, a member of the Dao Li Jiao, Master Reiki and initiated with the rites of Medicine Buddha Reiki
I love yoga. I love the layers of yoga. I think I “know” something and then I don’t and I think that is yoga or one aspect anyway. I like to imagine how much more open and aware I am in situations when I don’t expect something, when I am not familiar. There is razor sharp attention, no wandering mind, no chance to drift from the present moment. How often do I think I know a posture or even a person for that matter? If I already know, then what new thing could I possibly learn, but if I don’t know the possibilities are endless.
